Of the Greek tragedians, Seneca’s works seem most close to Euripides, in tone, plot, form, structure, and theme. But they are just as dissimilar in these myriad ways. Write an essay in which you compare and contrast Seneca’s Hercules Furens with Euripides’ Hippolytus, as a mini-study of the ways Greek and Roman tragedies are related but are also distinctly their own. Consider the ways both playwrights ponder solutions to larger questions about the human experience, how they both develop their characters, make use of the chorus, structure their plots, and deploy rich imagery.

Answer previewHercules, like Hippolytos, makes use of the chorus for recitations. An example of an expert of the chorus at the beginning of Act Two is ”CHORUS: But here comes Megara, overwhelmed by grief, her hair is down. She is bringing the little ones with her, and Hercules’ old father, hobbled with age’’ (Seneca, 210). In this case, the role of the chorus is to enhance the practicality of the play. Moreover, there are instances of the use of chorus for comprehensive artistic function (523-593). In contrast, the Chorus in Hippolytos includes the entrance song and the recitations. ‘’CHORUS {entrance song) Water from the river Okeanos drips down a certain rock…,’’ (Euripides, 156-200). The chorus has a significant role in evoking emotions.
