Impact of Media on Self-Esteem

2 seperate essay with different topics

Case 3: Argumentative Essay

Length: no less than 1,300 words, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt font size

In addition to your own thoughts, words, and ideas, this essay is to include TWO credible and reliable secondary sources.

The first person “I” is not used in a formal essay.

Case Assignment

For this assignment, you will choose one topic from the list below and write an argumentative essay.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay, which in this case, would be a statement affirming the point of view on the selected topic.

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. Each body paragraph must support (explain) your reasoning (rationale) using specific details. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world.

Be sure to proofread your essay and edit for proper grammar, punctuation, diction (word choice), and spelling, as errors in sentence skills will lower a final grade. A grade will be determined based on the Module 4 Case expectations and the Trident University General Education rubric for English.

This essay must include a combination of no less than SIX in-text citations from two or more credible and reliable sources. Citations are to be a combination of direct quotations and paraphrased quotations with or without the author’s name, and a Reference List in APA Style must be included.

  • Is eating, hunting, and/or the use of animals for research purposes justified?
  • Should military service should be required for all?
  • Does advertising and the media impact self-image, self-worth, and/or self-esteem?
  • Is modern culture ruining childhood?
  • In order to control crime, should all guns be banned?
  • In what ways are online shopping and “big-box” stores impacting society?

The media propagates unrealistic concepts of the perfect body for individuals (Mills, Shannon, & Hogue,  2017). Media outlets tend to reflect what is fashionable, attractive, or trendy in a society. The main goal behind creating adverts is to create catchy visuals that attract the attention of viewers. Most adverts use slender female models to bring attention to the products being marketed. The preference for slim models has fostered perceived unattractiveness, and this adverse impact has been more prevalent in women. Such advertisements have reinforced the view that women must become slender and have skin tones to be considered attractive. Given that people have different body and skin types, the media’s constant obsession with the specific body and skin types makes some people feel that their bodies are unattractive. Social media worsens the situation because people openly praise slender and light-skinned ladies while berating their bigger and dark-skinned counterparts. Researchers have discovered that “women’s body image was significantly negative after viewing thin media images”

Sample Image Analysis Essay: Prompt A
Sample Extended Definition Essay: Prompt B

  1. Instructions

Choose ONE of the following prompts for your informative essay.

PROMPT A: IMAGE ANALYSIS: Although we look at print advertisements every day, we often do not consider the ways in which they affect us. Visual images in ads can influence and persuade us, so it is important to evaluate them critically to understand their meanings. Good image analysis involves examination of the components of an image to gain an understanding of the whole.

Select an advertisement to analyze. The advertisement you choose should be directed towards a specific audience. To identify the intended audience, think about the members of the potential audience for the advertisement that you have chosen. Who are they? Ads for a beauty product, for example, may be aimed at young girls; ads for a deodorant might target men; a diaper commercial is likely intended for new parents; ads for cruise trips might be aimed at retirees. You can use any academically-appropriate advertisement to complete this assignment, as long as its intended audience is clearly identified.

Your thesis must inform the reader of your topic and purpose. Because you are writing in the informative mode, use objective language and a neutral point of view.

Draft an analytical essay that examines the audience, context, and purpose of the advertising image you’ve chosen. Read the article by Jenna Pack titled “Breaking Down an Image” for ideas about how to write an image analysis. Your analysis should lead to a conclusion about the ad’s effectiveness, based on examination of its components. Include the image with your draft.

PROMPT B: EXTENDED DEFINITION: Define or redefine one of the following words:

  • Family
  • Success
  • Courage
  • Art
  • Beauty

In your draft, briefly explain how society, or the dictionary, defines the word you’ve selected, and then explain your unique or extended definition of the word. Provide examples and explanations to support your definition. Your thesis must inform your readers of your new definition and, because you are writing in the informative mode, you must use objective language.

Draft an extended definition essay that defines or redefines a word or concept. Read the article by Dan Richards titled “Digital Ethics” for ideas about how to write an extended definition essay.

  1. Think About Your Writing

As a part of your completed draft, complete the color coding activity and include answers to all of the questions below your draft.

PART 1: Color Coding Activity:
Using the color codes provided, evaluate your draft as follows:

  • Use red text to indicate your thesis statement.
  • Use green text to indicate the topic sentence of each body paragraph.

Part 2: Questions
1. What is the significance of your essay? Why should readers care about what you have written? (2-3 sentences) Sophia says: Think about why you decided to analyze this particular image, or why you picked the word you chose to define. Your interest in in your subject matter should be clear to readers.
2. Which areas of your draft do you think will benefit most from revision? (2-3 sentences) Sophia says: Consider the organization, style, focus, development, and conventions of your draft. Which areas did you struggle to complete?
3. Consider the strengths and weaknesses of your writing. How can you capitalize on your strengths and improve on your weaknesses in future essays? (3-4 sentences) Sophia says: Think about what was easy about writing the draft, and what was more difficult. For example, if you write paragraphs with strong topic sentences, but repeatedly use the same type of sentence to provide supporting details, you can improve your paragraphs by varying sentence structure.

Society must perceive conventional beauty as nothing more than just outward facets that do not reflect a person’s qualities or values. While beauty is an ordinary concept with little to no harm by itself, societal connotations of conventional beauty as an indicator of a person’s worth are harmful (Smith, 2019). In this regard, girls with conventionally approved features like fair skin or a slender figure are often the beneficiaries of favoritism. Such incidences only demonstrate what many people have known for so long: that the meaning of words and concepts transcend definitive connotations and significantly impact people’s real lives. For instance, many people of color would find themselves excluded from professional spaces in the media and even beauty pageants. The media and corporate organizations replicated the phenomenon in advertisements where the models used to advertise various products fitted a particular mold.

Society should redefine beauty to be more inclusive and go beyond conventional perceptions that people have perpetuated for ages. For instance, western societies have been guilty of advancing stereotypical notions on what beauty entails and effectively excluded non-whites. For example, having fair white skin was regarded as the epitome of beauty, with Hispanics and Blacks being excluded (Carlock & Russell, 2015). Such perceptions are fallacious because they presume that non-white societies do not have beautiful people. With globalization taking root, it has become easier to interact with people of diverse descents in person or via social media and appreciate how different people have unique physical features. Therefore, this phenomenon is essential to ensure that racist and discriminative undertones are not perpetrated under the guise of beauty standards.
