The transmission of STDs, mainly gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis, through oral, vaginal, and anal sexual activities, has been surging. According to the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH Miami-Dade) (2019), in a population of 100,000, there were 652 persons with STDs between 2015 and 2017. These rates in Miami were higher than in Florida State, whereby in a population of 100,000, there were 649.2 persons with the diseases. When looking at HIV/AIDS, the high rates of infection are evident in men as a result of anal sex. Also, transmission through the sharing of needles in drug use increases the infection rate. As indicated by the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics (2019), the incidence rate value of 43.4 in HIV infections and 14.6 in AIDS, were classified as the worst rating. An incident rate of a value of not more than 11.6 in HIV and 5.7 in AIDS was classified as commendable performance.  Hence, this shows a need for improvement in reducing these numbers.

You have been asked to be a peer reviewer for a team of nurse researchers who are conducting a phenomenological study of the experiences of physical abuse during pregnancy. What specific questions would you ask the team during debriefing and what documents would you want the researchers to share?

Answer preview

In a scenario where I am a peer reviewer for a group of nurse researchers, I would ask the following questions during the debriefing session. First, I would ask for clarification on the method and design used to collect data. Asking for clarification would help me observe researchers’ responses and expressions to determine whether their research was genuine. It is because the phenomenological study involves obtaining data directly from the participant’s own words. Therefore, if the researchers cannot explain clearly about their encounter with the participants, then the research results might not be valid. The question on clarification is important in briefing sessions because it eliminates any doubts regarding the nature of the work being reviewed. It is because the peer reviewer can check whether the observations and interpretations are valid from the researchers’ faces (Scharp & Sanders, 2019).

As a nurse, I will educate the community on the purpose of primary care and emergency departments and when to use each.  I will advise them to seek primary care assistance incase of minor childhood illnesses.  Therefore, educating community members allows people to seek primary care services instead of opting for emergency services.

Some of the strategies that I will incorporate in the geriatric care are as follows.  I will advocate for the installation of bed alarms to reduce number falls, especially in hospitals or nursing homes.  Bed alarms will alert the nurses if an elderly patient attempts to leave from their beds without professional assistance (Gavaller, Gavaller,& Oh,  2019).  They improve the nursing staff response rate and reduce the number of falls or fall-related injuries in the facility.  However, bed alarms may be ineffective if nurses fail to respond in time.  The second strategy is the implementation of hourly rounds.  In this strategy, nurses are encouraged to move around geriatric wards or rooms regularly.  It allows nurses to reduce the number of falls in the hospitals as nurses will inspect the safety of elderly patients and take corrective measures if some of them are in danger.  The last strategy is educating nurses. According to Cuttler Barr-Walker, & Cuttler (2017), nurse education critical in reducing geriatric falls. In contemporary American society, the public has become highly diverse, influencing the interactions of the police with the people in a multicultural environment (DeGeneste and Sullivan, 2017). The needs of the community members have become involved; thus, changes were made in the police agencies. A diversified strategy was employed whereby individuals from different races and ethnic backgrounds were recruited in the police force. This transformation was crucial to help in communication due to factors such as language barriers. Other enforced reforms as a result of the diverse society include hiring women into law enforcement agencies to meet the needs of the female gender was neglected. However, not all changes made are viewed as positive since discrimination against diverse populations such as African Americans is still rampant in the United States. Police brutality against individual members of the community due to race has become a major policing issue.

Furthermore, decision-making aids nurse leaders in employee hiring and firing for the clinic and patients’ benefit. When registered nurses (RN) graduate from college, they apply for nursing positions in their choice clinics. Nurse executives must use wise decision-making during face-to-face RN candidate interviews to determine best-fit interviewees. Similarly, decision-making helps nurse executives recommend RNs to be fired for gross misconduct after reviewing their performances (Weiss & Tappen, 2015). Therefore, nurse leaders use decision-making to identify which nursing staff clinical facilities should retain or fire to enhance patient care quality.

Moreover, nurse managers use decision-making to identify hardworking employees and those that require improving after reviewing junior nurses’ performances.
