Clinicians can portray ageism, but there are several ways to reduce the incidences of ageism. In addition to dismissing symptoms of elderly patients in the name of the ‘aging process,’ clinicians can also treat aging symptoms as a disease and prescribe unnecessary treatments to elderly patients. According to Chamberlain et al. (2019), perspectives towards ageism are shaped from as early as medical school. Students view elderly patients as a source of frustration and a reminder of their preexisting death anxiety. But ageism can be reduced through knowledge. Knowledge provides empowerment allowing people to recognize their stereotypes towards the elderly and confront them for an attitude change.
