Family structures have evolved from the traditional nuclear family to more complex forms such as stepfamilies, single-parent families, foster families, and multigeneration families. Substance abuse is one of the biggest modern threats to family structures. In 2017, approximately 19.7 million Americans aged 12 and older struggled with a substance use disorder (Reiter, 2019).  According to Reiter (2019), addiction and drug abuse cost the general American society over $740 billion yearly in healthcare expenses, lost workplace productivity, and crime-related costs. Suffice to say, drug and substance abuse is the current serious families’ crisis that needs collective intervention efforts.(324words)
