Answer preview

The ERA was a proposal to amend the United States Constitution even though it has never been ratified in all states. ERA’s purpose was to invalidate different federal and state laws that have been discriminating primary against women. ERA proposed that their sex should not determine citizen’s legal rights. ERA was introduced in 1923 to Congress immediately after women were given the right to vote. It was then received approval by the United States Senate in 1972, forty-nine years later (Barnett 155). The legislatures ratified it in different states and thirty-eight by 1982, but this has never happened today. If ratification could be completed, ERA could be the 27th Amendment to the United States Constitution.
