Another challenge that the main characters in the “Oriented” documentary encounter are the conflict with the heteronormative, chauvinistic Arab community that struggles with its sexuality. In general terms, the Arabic Islamic community only upholds the heterosexual intimate relationship and has a condemnatory attitude towards any marriage or intimate relationship other between male and female partners. In this case, it is hard for the three Palestinian gays to convince the community and their family as well that they would choose to have a homosexual relationship for their own happiness. To the Palestinian community, heteronormative sexuality is not only appropriate, but it is a source of pride and security for the family and the entire community. It is due to this reason that Naeem’s father advises him to forego his happiness and get a woman to marry to retain the family’s reputation and security.
