Although leaders and managers have different attributes, an individual can possess all of them. One such individual was my direct supervisor, who served as a manager and leader for our team. His authority over the team was formal, considering he was appointed to his position. Despite this, my supervisor was quite adept at formulating a vision of what he would like the team to achieve by the end of each year. Furthermore, after doing this, the supervisor would communicate this vision to the team and involve everyone in formulating specific goals and objectives to facilitate the attainment of this vision. My supervisor would then come up with different ways to motivate team members to achieve these goals and, at the end of the year, would evaluate the performance of every team member. These evaluations were used to not only assess goals and objectives achievements but also pinpoint improvement areas.
