Like the Puerto Ricans, the Irish also strictly adhere to the dictates of their culture (Singel, 2017). Family is also an essential part of the Irish heritage. Their culture is a tad unique considering the practice of marrying off young ladies to older members of the community. The Irish embrace a patrilineal family structure that extended into aspects such as inheritance where the daughters were never allowed to inherit their father’s properties. The father was the primary decision maker within the household. However, there are instances where the father consults with the mother, such as decisions concerning the welfare of the family (Singel, 2017). Even though the Irish are patrilineal, their women have significant influence over community matters compared to women from other communities. The respect they have for the elderly, coupled with the strong familial bonds, means that medical decisions are not unilateral decisions but require all family members’ input. Their perchance of ignoring signs and symptoms of diseases affects health care delivery within the Irish community.
