Answer preview
Syphilis is caused by a spirochete known as Treponema pallidum, which is a spiral and fragile bacterium. The bacterium is usually 0.25 micrometers in diameter and about 6 to 15 micrometers long (Theel et al., 2020). The spirochete is only visible with dark-field microscopy, where it is identified by its unique movements. Treponema pallidum can only survive for a few minutes outside the body and is solely a human pathogen. Therefore, for transmission to occur, direct contact has to occur with the infectious lesion. Treponema pallidum is majorly spread through unprotected sexual contact but is also spread through the blood referred to the utero and other blood products. Approximately 83.7% of the reported syphilis cases in the US are transmitted through unprotected sex (Casey, 2019). Since Treponema pallidum cannot survive in places where it is exposed to disinfectants, this means it cannot be contracted from toilet seats or other surfaces. Some of the risk factors for contracting syphilis include having HIV/AIDS, having unprotected sex with multiple partners, and being gay.
