Even though individuals cannot form intimate friendships with every friend in their lives, people are encouraged to try and form these friendships with a few of their friends. Amati et al. (2018) argue that intimate friends will always be there for each other during the good and bad times, always listen to one another and empathize with the struggles and challenges experienced by friends. Furthermore, Amati et al. (2018) posit that whenever a person is with an intimate friend, they will enjoy spending time with them. This is because such a friend makes a person feel good about themselves when they are around them. According to Amati et al. (2018), these friendships are crucial for two primary reasons. Intimate friendships make people’s lives a lot better and more enjoyable. These friendships allow people to share lives with people they love, thereby enriching their daily experiences.

People often seek out counselors when something bad happens in their lives and they do not know how to deal with it. Therefore, by seeking the services of a counselor, these individuals are looking for assistance to deal with their challenges and struggles (Schofield, 2019). Since intimate friendships can add immense value to people’s lives, counselors should integrate this concept into their practice. When working with clients, counselors can inform them of the benefits of having intimate friends and how to form these friendships (Schofield, 2019). To do this, counselors can give real-life examples of these friendships to demonstrate to clients how intimate friends can serve as vital support systems to clients. After doing this, counselors should monitor the progress clients are making toward achieving this objective (Schofield, 2019). By monitoring them, a counselor will get a chance to discover and address the challenges clients are experiencing when they are trying to form intimate friendships.
