They do establish a supportive environment that helps nurses to cope with the stressors that are present during their routine practice.   For instance, a nurse leader helps the newly hired nurses to manage challenges that they do encounter and counterproductive influences that may result in emotional exhaustion and poor team collaboration. Different studies show that emotional exhaustion on the part of the nursing staff is the leading cause of poor health services and medical errors. Therefore, by providing emotional support to other nurses, a nurse leader supports the delivery of quality and safe health services.

Unit Manager

Possession of nurse leadership qualities can be very effective, especially in unit management (Swearingen, 2009). A nurse unit management role entails recruiting new nursing staff, managing and evaluating nursing staff, and provision of feedback on career progression.  Nurse leadership may improve unit manager skills pertaining to communication, creating a vision, and mentorship.  It helps the nurse unit manager establish a collaborative working culture that steers excellence.
