Implications of increasing the minimum wage are a significant concern for policymakers and researchers. Policymakers have contrasting views on increasing the minimum wage, either promoting, opposing, or calling for a sophisticated mechanism to regulate the process. Some research findings explain that a high minimum wage potentially reduces unemployment (Card & Krueger, 1993).  Other researchers consider a high minimum wage as a key factor reducing hiring efforts for the low wage jobs. An increase in minimum wage affects employees in low-wage jobs, less experienced workers, and experienced workers in the middle-level jobs in different magnitude. However, low wages jobs raise the greatest concern on minimum wage changes than better-paid jobs. These opportunities are dominated by high school diploma holders or dropouts (Jardim et al., 2018). The proponents of minimum wage increase consider the low jobs as a dead end with no growth opportunity. These employees are held back by various forces in the labor markets, lacking opportunities for advancement. Thus increasing the minimum wages could result in increased retention and improved quality of life.  On the other hand, opponents consider low jobs as temporary opportunities for employees with low skills gained from spending time in the job (Jardim et al., 2018).  Policies for increasing the minimum wage can reduce job turnover rates and decrease the workforce’s rates of a new entry (Jardim et al., 2018; Kalenkoski, n.d).  The latter most hit the youths by reducing employment opportunities. Those in the job market are also likely to lose opportunities for on the job training focused on higher wages in the future.
