As an instructional leader, there are different ways I could have handled this controversy differently and avoided shaming my students. Instructional leaders, especially if they are principals, are responsible for ensuring they provide the teaching staff and support staff within the institutions with the requisite resources to allow them to cater to their students’ needs. By introducing a lunch shaming policy, the school was doing the opposite of this, because doing so creates an inhospitable learning environment. To avoid this, the principal should have drafted letters to all the affected families, informing them that they intend to withhold offering meals to their children for failure to pay the required meals. By doing this, parents will be aware of what is going on, and as such, contact the school to find ways of paying their debts, even if it would be through flexible and intermittent payments.
