The National Institute of Mental Health was established by the National Mental Health Act of 1946 (Harris, Maloney, & Rother, 2018). The act became law on July 3rd 1946 after being signed by President Harry Truman. The act was intended to make the mental health of citizens a federal government’s priority. This act was propelled by the alarming mental health deterioration of some veterans and draftees. The National Mental Health Institute was intended to establish diagnosis procedures and treatments of mental health disorders. NIMH was intended to consolidate resources redirected from state to federal level to facilitate further research and analysis on psychiatric disorders and the human brain.
