Nightingale also contributed to the importance of patient assessment. She walked around with her lantern late at night, chatting to and assessing her patients’ conditions. All nursing actions are founded on nursing evaluations, which are at the center of the profession. With that in mind, it’s only right that her practice of making assessment rounds earned her the nickname “the lady with the lamp” among the soldiers. The practice has also been adopted in current nursing practices through the nurse rounds (Strout, 2012). The evaluation guarantees that the patient’s condition is closely monitored and detected, lowering the chance of complications that could jeopardize the patient’s health. The nurse also conducts an assessment of unstable or deteriorating patients and a review of their progress during their inpatient stay. During her rounds, Nightingale spoke with her patients, giving compassion and understanding in their time of need.
