CASE STUDY: Preschool Child: Ricky
Ricky, age 4 years, arrives in the clinic with his mother. Ricky lives with his mother and father, who both work full-time, and his infant sister. Their extended family lives in a different state more than 100 miles away. Both parents are of average height and in good health. Ricky’s mother mentions that Ricky often expresses frustration, particularly in regard to food. Conflict over food occurs every day. Mealtime is a battle to get him to eat, unless his mother feeds him. Ricky’s baby sister seems to tolerate all baby foods but requires her mother to spoon-feed. Ricky’s mother is quite frustrated and concerned that he will become malnourished.

In addition to that, extended families play a vital role in contributing to the resources needed to support health promotion. Studies have shown that families who live in extended family circles live healthier lifestyles than families who live as a single isolated unit (Panico, Bartley, Kelly, McMunn & Sacker, 2019). This effect has been attributed to the support mechanism of living close to extended families. In the case of Ricky’s family, the fact that they live more than 100 miles away from their extended families signifies the absence of a support system in the form of family members who could show concern about their wellbeing. This concern expressed by the support mechanism could promote a healthier lifestyle and better life decisions that could translate into better health outcomes for Ricky’s family. Therefore, distance from the extended family could be a significant deterrent from the family’s approach to health promotion.
