My name is Rachel, which has its historical origin from the Old Testament. From the Bible, Rachel was the wife to Jacob, who worked form fourteen years to get blessings from Laban, Rachel’s father. As presented by BehindtheName (2019), history from the Old Testament shows that Laban tricked Jacob by making him work on his farm for seven years as pay marrying the woman he loved. However, after the seven years, Laban gave Jacob his older daughter Leah. Jacob, however, insisted that he wanted Rachel; therefore, he was asked to work another seven years to accomplish his dream. With that in mind, the name Rachel is from the Hebrew origin, which means ewe or innocent lamp/female sheep. The name Rachel was popularly used in Medieval Europe by the Jewish communities. Among the Jews, the Zohar Jewish text reveals that Rachel was an essential figure since her presence meant that the spirit of God was his people (Niedner, 2002). Hence, the Jewish believed that Rachel in Jewish traditions plays the role of interceding for exiles, for she could access God when she cried to Him. History further shows that after the Reformation period, Protestants adopted the name from the Old Testament. Overall, research presented by the BehindtheName (2019) shows that the name, Rachel has a 77% rating. Further, it is a famous name in the United States with a popularity ranking of 198 as of 2018.(688words)
