I have taken several steps and aspire to do more to address these barriers. I am now more deliberate about listening to the rationale behind people’s actions, norms, and traditions before making conclusions. Keeping an open mind has made it much easier for me to interact with and accommodate different people peacefully. I am now talking to more people from different cultures, most of who I would have otherwise ignored and assumed we have nothing in common. Additionally, I have tried to come out of my cultural cocoon to look at different issues from the cultures of the people involved, and this has positively affected my actions and attitudes towards them.

Another strategy is the use of community coalitions to reduce substance abuse among young people. The coalitions involve professional staff and community residents working in collaboration to reduce substance abuse. When substance use is discouraged among young people, a community can raise responsible citizens who play a great role in community development. Another strategy is through mentorships to make the youth realize the available opportunities. Available opportunities can help young people to evolve and grow, leading to a better community. It is because the youth are very active when engaging in activities that improve their communities.
