In 2009, Zuckerberg (Facebook’s CEO) altered the terms of use regulating how and for how long the company uses users’ information on its platform. Even though Zuckerberg did this quietly, Consumerist.com discovered what he did and informed the public that this change would allow the company to continue using the information posted by users for promotional, marketing, and other purposes even after users deleted their information from the platform. Once what Zuckerberg did became public, numerous consumer privacy advocacy groups and users came together to criticize the change in the company’s terms of use for Facebook. The negative publicity this decision generated forced Zuckerberg to use political influence tactics to deal with the criticism. Specifically, two weeks after changing Facebook’s terms of use, Zuckerberg announced that the company would revert to its initial terms of use as it analyzes users’ feedback. In addition, he also indicated that the company will revise its terms of use and even asked users to share ideas on the company’s website, “Facebook bill of Rights and Responsibilities.”
