American political system

esources (peer-reviewed journal articles, books, etc.) to substantiate your positions. Be sure to cite your sources in-text and on a separate reference sheet (for each answer). The length of your answers will vary but I think each question can be sufficiently addressed in 5-7 pages (10-14 pages overall), double-spaced. The exam answers must be submitted by December 6th.

I have enjoyed working with each of you. Good luck on the exam!

1. A perennial concern in the American political system is the potential federal encroachment on state authority. Recent examples of which might be the “Affordable Care Act” or the “No Child Left Behind Act.” What are mechanisms by which states can respond to any such shift in the federal-state balance? How well do they work in maintaining “proper balance.”

Political ideology

Using at least two of these readings as evidence, discuss and analyze how one’s political ideology is a product of the historical/cultural environment in which one lives (personal circumstances, religious views, family climate, national identity, gender/sexual identity, etc. can all apply here as well). In other words, how does our culture, our national identity, and current events influence our opinions on government, its role in the lives of the governed, etc; conversely, another way to think about this assignment is to ask and answer the following question: How can we analyze a system of government to infer its architects’ cultural, social, and/or historical circumstances? Be sure to use concrete examples from your cited sources and analyze those examples to show how they support/prove your thesis.

Requirements:

MLA style throughout
750 words minimum (roughly, don’t bother counting)

Paragraphs focused around your own ideas
Textual evidence used to support your own claims
Close analysis of textual evidence

Political economist

Adam Smith, a very influential eighteenth-century political economist, wrote, “By pursuing his own interest, he frequently promotes that of the society more effectually than when he really intends to promote it” (cited in Stiglitz & Rosengard, 2015, p. 62). Considering the quotation, in 1,250-1,500 words, address the following questions.

Describe what Smith meant by the “invisible hand.” How exactly does it function?

Describe how Smith’s work is a reaction to mercantilism, which dominated the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As a point of departure, define mercantilism.

Discuss if all 19th-century thinkers agree with Smith. How did, for instance, Karl Marx view the doctrine of laissez-faire? What were the inevitable consequences of such an economic system?
Discuss the influences of Smith and his critics, like Marx, reflected in the mixed economy of the United States today.

Use three to five scholarly resources to support your explanations.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Collaborative governance

1. I need you to create another presentation just like the one you did before regarding the 1. Shui-Yan Tang and Daniel A. Mazmanian (2010) “Understanding Collaborative Governance from the Structural Choice Politics, IAD, and Transaction Cost Perspectives,” Working Paper.

2. However, the professor did not like the collaborative governance example for Newport Beach and instead wants it to be on collaborative governance as it relates to the Police Abolition situation in Minneapolis.

3. Attached you can find all the required guidelines for the submission, but I also need to you address these specific topics thoroughly and clearly.

– Address the ideas of collaborative governance, IAD framework, structural choice politics, cartels, transaction cost analysis as the key ideas of the presentation, as it relates to the Police Abolition movement in Minneapolis.

– A huge point for this is that we need to address the role of non-profits. For example look into how one of the nonprofits mentioned in the articles I provided you with is trying to implement change in policy or defunding. Try to make the presentation about exploring the concepts and key ideas mentioned above and applying them to more specific institutions working on the idea of defunding/police abolition on a smaller scale.

4. When linking the reading to the specific policy issue or public organization you choose, you should keep the following in mind:

a. What key facets of the policy issues or public organization connect to the reading?

b. How does theory come to life in the policy issues or public organization you have chosen?

c. How can this policy issue or public organization help us learn the 3 to 5 key ideas from the reading you have identified?

d. Are there any gaps, inaccuracies, or other problems you see in the reading? Is this reflected in the real-world context you have chosen to examine?

Political affiliation

Regardless of political affiliation, individuals often grow concerned when considering perceived competing interests of government and their impact on topics of interest to them. The realm of healthcare is no different. Some people feel that local, state, and federal policies and legislation can be either helped or hindered by interests other than the benefit to society.

Consider for example that the number one job of a legislator is to be reelected. Cost can be measured in votes as well as dollars. Thus, it is important to consider the legislator’s perspective on either promoting or not promoting a certain initiative in the political landscape.

To Prepare:

Review the Resources and reflect on efforts to repeal/replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Consider who benefits the most when policy is developed and in the context of policy implementation.
By Day 3 of Week 3

Post an explanation for how you think the cost-benefit analysis in terms of legislators being reelected affected efforts to repeal/replace the ACA. Then, explain how analyses of the voters views may affect decisions by legislative leaders in recommending or positioning national policies (e.g., Congress’ decisions impacting Medicare or Medicaid). Remember, the number one job of a legislator is to be re-elected. Please check your discussion grading rubric to ensure your responses meet the criteria.

Political communities

Please answer ALL of the following questions based on the book below:

Four Texts on Socrates by Aristophanes and Plato (West and West)

You should demonstrate that you have read the texts by quoting (sparingly) from important passages (and citing the page number), and by demonstrating a general familiarity with them.

1. What are the needs of the political community? What must all political communities do to insure their survival? What about Philosophy? What does philosophy seek? How does it go about this process? Now, please compare and contrast the Socrates of the Clouds, with the Socrates of the Platonic dialogues.

2. Is Socrates against nature, or following it? Please draw examples from Aristophanes’ The Clouds and the relevant PlatonicDialogues.

3. Does Socrates use the “unjust” speech? In order to answer this question, you should first define what the unjust speech is. Why is it unjust? And, is Socrates guilty of using it? If so, why? If not, why?
