Answer preview
The enslavement that African Americans underwent has made them vulnerable to racial prejudices. During the slavery period, enslaved African Americans were treated as inferior people. The slavery systems were designed to make the blacks entirely dependent on whites since they were prevented from learning to write and read. At the same time, their behavior and movements were restricted. The slave owners easily had their way sexually with enslaved women. Rebellious slaves were punished, and while slave marriages lacked a legal basis, slaves nevertheless married, and others managed to raise families. After Congress ended the slave trade, slave owners encouraged slave marriages to ensure a constant supply of slaves. The slave masters could sell slaves hence separating families as they wished. Even though slaves started revolts in the 19th century, a few were successful, while the majority were unsuccessful. Supporters of slavery interpreted the slavery revolts organized by African Americans as being barbaric, and this led many states in the South to strengthen the slave codes.
