Another factor for the separation of white and black feminists is that whites were outspoken compared to blacks. According to Breines (29), white women were outspoken in that the whites amplified some issues that were considered mainly nonissues by blacks[1]. Over the years, white feminists have focused on sexism in the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a factor that black women at the time did not consider an issue. White women perceived the role they played in SNCC as worthless since they wanted to do other things apart from typing in the office. Black women were primarily contended in what they did as Breines (35) says that the majority of women in SNCC were uninterested in pursuing gender issues[2]. Culture played a vital role in the way women perceived themselves in SNCC. Whereas black women were raised to be independent-minded and outgoing, whites’ women had not been encouraged to develop their potential.
