1. John Rawls, one of the most influential liberal theorists of the twentieth century, argues that economic inequalities ought to be arranged such that they offer the greatest to the least advantaged in society. How does Rawls’s “justice as fairness” achieve that outcome? How is the “maximin” principle morally justified? Should public officials be obliged to consider how policies affect those who are the least well-off in society? Explain.
2. In contrast to John Rawls, Robert Nozick contends that the proper role of government is not to meddle with the distribution of resources so as to produce a “fair” distribution. Instead, the right to self-ownership and the right to hold property, free of government intervention, are paramount. What does Nozick mean by self-ownership and the right to property? How does Nozick’s conception of fairness differ from Rawls’s?

When referring to self-ownership, Nozick means the absolute ownership of a person’s labor and skills by himself. Nozick believed that people owned their labor which gave them full control of the transfer of resources they received from others for their labor (Omidvar, 2021). He noted that although the world and its objects are unowned, a person’s talents, skills are their private property. When discussing the right to property, Nozick believed that those who own property have a right to decide what to do with it. As a result, they could opt to sell, keep, transfer and bequeath without restriction. Nozick believed that the equal distribution of property would only occur if everyone in that community had a right to do whatever they pleased with their properties without government influence. The two differ in their belief of the means to achieve much-needed equality.
