Families in the Puerto Rican heritage are organized in the traditional patriarchal roles. The family can either be nuclear or extended, and two families can live in the same household.   However, there is a significant transformation towards egalitarian relationships. The needs of the family supersede those of individual members, and children are raised to have respect for adults. Emphasis is on family care over self-care. The family acts as a source of identity and support for individuals in response to physical and psychological healthcare needs (Przeworski, & Piedra, 2020). The cultural beliefs which are transmitted in the families influence their access to healthcare services. For instance, their emphasis is on curative healthcare and responds less to health promotion and prevention services.
