Clinical Significance

How does a nurse know what (if any) knowledge in a research study is usable for clinical practice? What would a critical thinker look for in the evidence before deciding to change? What influence do credibility and clinical significance have on your decisions to integrate research-based evidence into your practice?

Answer preview

Hello classmate, I agree with you that a nurse understands what knowledge is useful for clinical practice during research by looking at all study components used to see if they are credible and accurate. Descriptive analysis helps nurses develop theories and shape decisions that affect people’s health (Armijo-Olivo, 2018). As you said, the significance of a research finding does not have to be significant clinically. The research results must be credible and clinically substantial for nurses and all health care professionals to help them implement evidence-based changes. Indeed, as critical thinkers, nurses must make sure that the study is credible and clinically significant.

Another research fraud reported by the department of criminal justice is scientific research misconduct. Duke University accepted to pay $ 112.5 million in settlement of its violation of research ethics through falsified reports. The case involves violations of the integrity of federal funding decisions. Research funding should be used honestly and efficiently (U.S. Department of Justice, 2020, March 25). In this case, the defendant knowingly falsified data, and hence the issuance of the punishment was deterrence of the violations in the research funding process. The commitment is to ensure that the credibility of the research process is preserved and all similar underlying issues are evaluated through a clear jurisprudence. The ruling also determined that the restitution also included $33,750,000 for compensation of the whistleblower for the commitments involved. Dr. Eric T. Poehlman, a former tenured research professor at the University of Vermont (UVM) College of Medicine in Burlington, was asked to pay a comprehensive settlement for falsifying and fabricating data. Materially false statement in the grant application is a key issue.
