IDENTIFYING YOUR U.S. HOUSE DISTRICT AND ISSUE

  • Enter the address you’re registered to vote at this website.*
    • Once you hit submit, you should find your US House district number on the left-hand side. The website shows who is currently serving your house district.
  • With a quick internet search, visit the official campaign websites of the Republican and Democrat running in your district and find the issues they support (or don’t support).
    • It is likely, your current congressperson (incumbent) is running for reelection.
    • There is usually a link on their official campaign website that says “Issues.” Read through each candidates’ website and start comparing them.
      • Here is an example of Congressperson Roy Chip’s Campaign Website and it’s Issues page. He represents US House District 21. With incumbents, it is important to distinguish their campaign website from their official congressional website.
  • Select ONE issue that is important to you. You will be writing about this issue for your essay and comparing how each candidate stands on this issue.
  • Read some online news articles about the candidates running in your US House district. Local and state newspapers are good place to start, like Dallas Morning News or Texas Tribune.

GATHERING SOURCES

Conduct research to locate at least two academic journal articles (aka: peer-reviewed or scholarly sources) that specifically address the issue you selected.

  • The articles must be no more than ten (10) years old.
  • The article must have more than five (5) pages of actual content (without graphs, charts, footnotes, citations, etc.).
  • Books, dissertations, and theses will not count toward this minimum research requirement.

Carefully choose sources that provide a variety of perspectives on your selected topic. In addition to the minimum research requirements, you should use high quality sources for essential current events information relevant to your topic. These include academic sources that are not peer-reviewed (position papers), newspaper articles, magazine articles, and other quality or reputable sources.

Julie Oliver has an extensive resume, which includes over a decade of experience working in health care finance at a hospital in Austin, Texas (Ruiz-Grossman, 2018). Unlike her opponent, Oliver came from a modest background, raised by a single mother in a town called Ovilla, just on Dallas’s outskirts. She readily owns up to her struggles and negative experiences, often indicating on her campaign adverts that she once ran away from home, a stint that resulted in her getting pregnant. Oliver feels that many voters will relate more with her, considering the share similar struggles and challenges. She managed to overcome the difficulties of her modest upbringing to attain a law degree from the University of Texas, which later propelled her to become a health care finance professional (Ruiz-Grossman, 2018). She hopes the experience she garnered from working in the health care sector makes her well placed to address Texas’s 25th
