An understanding of the symptoms of alterations in cardiovascular and respiratory systems is a critical step in diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. For APRNs this understanding can also help educate patients and guide them through their treatment plans.
In this Assignment, you examine a case study and analyze the symptoms presented. You identify the elements that may be factors in the diagnosis, and you explain the implications to patient health.

The symptoms shown by the patient are shortness of breath, abdominal swelling, peripheral edema, and weight gain. Edema is the swelling of the lower hands and legs due to fluids gathered on some tissues. Often, people experience edema when pregnant or after a long travel, but for the woman aged 76 years, these cannot be the reasons for the edema. Edema can be a result of venous insufficiency. When veins fail to transport enough blood from all other parts of the body to the heart and back, it can accumulate fluid in the legs. The blood can force the fluid of the vessels causing accumulation in tissues and hence the edema. Heart failure is also a possibility for the edema.
