Annotation of a Qualitative Research Article

Annotation of a Qualitative Research Article Assignment

This week, you will submit the annotation of a qualitative research article on a topic of your interest. Narrative, ethnographic, grounded theory, case study, and phenomenology are examples of types of research designs or approaches used in qualitative research.

An annotation consists of three separate paragraphs that cover three respective components: summary, analysis, and application. These three components convey the relevance and value of the source. As such, an annotation demonstrates your critical thinking about, and authority on, the source topic. This week’s annotation is a precursor to the annotated bibliography assignment due in Week 10.

An annotated bibliography is a document containing selected sources accompanied by a respective annotation of each source. In preparation for your own future research, an annotated bibliography provides a background for understanding a portion of the existing literature on a particular topic. It is also a useful first step in gathering sources in preparation for writing a subsequent literature review as part of a dissertation.

Please review the assignment instructions below and click on the underlined words for information about how to craft each component of an annotation.

Please use the document “Annotated Bibliography Template with Example” for additional guidance.

It is recommended that you use the grading rubric as a self-evaluation tool before submitting your assignment.

Answer preview

John Smith examines different interpretive investigators’ ideas and opinions on the right procedures and judge’s interpretive inquiry criteria. Some interpretive investigators include Dilthey and Weber, Bogdan & Biklen, 1982, LeCompte & Goetz, 1982, Wolcott, 1975, Bruyn,1966, Johnson 1975, and an article written by Guba, 1981. Dilthey and Weber were among the first investigators who pointed out that interpretive inquiries should never be conducted using the physical science methods because there is an essential difference in the subject matter (Smith, 1984). Dilthey pointed out that physical science deals with inanimate objects that can be seen, while interpretive inquiries focus on the human mind’s products, such as emotions and values. However, Weber pointed out that the two Dilthey’s perspectives can be combined to develop a universally valid knowledge by establishing them to a specific subject matter that concerns them both. Other investigators like Hindess, 1977, Habermas, 1968 and Rorty, 1982 provided contradicting perspectives (Smith, 1984). Smith’s primary problem after analyzing the opinions and viewpoints of the different investigators is the issue of criteria and assumptions of interpretative and naturalistic inquiry. However, he proposes member checks as the absolute minimum due to the high level of inconsistencies and incompatibilities of assumptions and criteria.
