War on poverty

Write a paper in which you research and analyze President Lyndon B Johnson’s key initiatives for his “war on poverty” in the 1960’s.While often remembered for his failure to end the Vietnam War and his crude personality, president Johnson felt deeply about ending poverty. You should research what initiatives were put into place (remember that Congress and the Senate also played a role in passing them), what their goals were, and then how successful they have been, or if they have not been successful. When you are analyzing some of these laws and programs (choose a few, not all) look at what made them succeed or fail. Was there enough funding? Were they implemented in the same way in each state? Were the programs funded and ran by the federal or state governments, or a combination of both? Are these programs still workable today, or do they need to be modified?

Other Information:

The EOA supported increased funding for programs that directly created jobs. The programs featured mostly in the program are the Job Corps, work-study, Community Action Program (CAP), and the Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA). According to Bailey & Duquette, the CAP was intended to provide services and activities that eradicate poverty (359). The EOA provided three radical approaches that guided the allocation of resources to CAP. One provision is that the allocation of funds is based on the apportionment index across all states. With this provision, states with large numbers of poor people receive more funds than states with few poor people. The second provision is that funds flow directly to agencies working on eradicating poverty and not through states or local governments. The third provision is that CAP programs be developed and administered with residents’ participation in the targeted areas.

Sexual violence against black women

We have been discussing McGuire’s novel thesis that sexual violence against black women and the response by black women to have those crimes investigated and prosecuted is what spawned the civil rights movement. As the movement progressed from the rape of Recy Taylor to late 1960s, the movement learned more and more about how to use media and the justice system to obtain justice for black people. Show the progression through the various crimes and the reactions to those crimes by black people through the book that eventually led to prosecutions of and long prison sentences for white men. What were the advances made in each instance? What were the lessons learned? How did the movement reach the point of obtaining prison sentences for rapes of black women and lynchings of black men? As always, draw upon the text by quoting and citing to support your claims.

I attached the reading. The reading is long but I need it to be read for this assignment. At the very LEAST skim the reading. You MUST draw upon text to do this assignment. There shouldn’t be much of any cited sources other than the text. This is not really resarched based. You can do little research but please use the document as your main source.

African American women no longer felt safe in their homes, and as they walked around the streets because they would be randomly abducted and then assaulted (McGuire, 2010). Some white men pushed this further by using the allure of financial freedom to assault women sexually. For example, white business people would lie to African American women that they will offer them steady work and better wages. However, when these women showed up to work, these men would kidnap them at gunpoint and proceed to rape them. Authorities were aware of what was happening but rarely did anything to stop such criminal activities from taking place or arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of such beastly acts. Racy Taylor was not the only woman to undergo such degradation; others such as Harriet Jacobs, Rosa Lee Coats, and Betty Jean Owens went through a similar experience at the hands of white men (McGuire, 2010). African American men were also not spared from the wrath of these criminals.

Discussions: Theoretical Approaches to Migration

You have learned a lot about different approaches to studying migration in this lesson and the readings. Compare and contrast two of the models that you learned about this week. Which of the approaches did you find most compelling or useful, and why?

Students will a) respond to the discussion prompt with one original response (250-350 words) and b) also respond to at least one original post from another student in a substantive manner (100-150 words- To be sent later). By substantive, I mean more than “I agree” or “that’s interesting.” I want you to elaborate: what do you agree with, and why? What specifically is interesting, and why do you think that?

Out of the 25 points possible for each Discussion, the original post is worth a total of 15 points, and the response is worth a total of 10 points.

The most useful theoretical approach to migration between the two is the historical-structural approach. It is because changes in the global economy are the leading factor for migration. The socio-economic relations in one’s home country will compel them to migrate to economically stable nations. Also, the unequal distribution of political power is another critical reason for human displacement. The expansion of global capitalism has motivated migrants to move to wealthier and more privileged Western countries (Massey, 1999). The push-pull theory is driven by individuals who seek capitalism and labor in advanced nations, which forms part of globalization. Therefore, people do not seek migration because they are agents of their own lives. The unfavorable situations in migrants home countries, such as economic and political

The Cold War was not America’s fault because the U.S. was responding to the Soviet’s aggressive expansionism. For example, the U.S. started airlifting food and other supplies into West Berlin after the Berlin Blockade by the Soviets. This dealt the Soviet a heavy blow because they emerged as the losers and eventually removing the blockage. Furthermore, the Soviet Union started to provide economic, military, and technical assistance to the Asian communist governments. As a response, the U.S. supported the Asian countries opposing communism, which further escalated the tension between the two sides. The U.S. developed the Truman Doctrine through which they started providing military and financial aid to the nations threatened by Soviet communism (Duric, 2017). This helped to stop the Soviets from imposing communism in Turkey and Greece. Although the measures taken by the U.S.

World War I and II had an immense impact on the United States economy. Even though the United States took part in World War I for a small duration, it was enough to change many things. The economic mobilization that happened during this period was a lot. The need to arm the country’s military forces pushed the government to seek partnerships with the private sector to perform certain tasks such as ammunition and gun production (Krpec & Hodulak, 2019). The injection of funds into the private sector allowed for the expansion of factories and companies involved in manufacturing supplies for the military.

Education is an essential component of every person, regardless of being a girl or a boy.  It helps a person become smarter and learn new things and facts around the world. Parents should give their children an equal opportunity to access education regardless of their gender.  For a long time, women have been discriminated against by their male counterparts in all aspects, including access to education, wealth, better jobs, and so on.  Since ancient times, society did not put a lot of emphasis on educating the girl child.  In other words, girls were perceived as the tool to marry, bear, and raise children while caring for home activities.  Compared to the boys, girls were only educated on basic issues that were intended to helps them in their marriage life.   In most societies across the world, they believe that women are not supposed to be educated and whoever caught educating them faces grave consequences.

I think that the myth of Poseidon is irrelevant in today’s society. There was limited scientific studies and research to explain natural phenomena like earthquakes when the tale was created. It was, therefore, easy for the people to believe that angry gods caused these phenomena. However, following the Age of Enlightenment, science, research and knowledge have sufficiently explained the existence of things that were once attributed to gods in myths (Baklanov, Baklanova, Erokhin, Ponarina & Akopyan, 2018). For instance, science has shown that the earthquakes presumably caused by Poseidon are a product of sudden slips that release energy in waves that travel through the earth’s crust, causing shaking.

Hemingway’s

in Ernest Hemingway’s short story “Indian Camp” the author creates three characters, Nick, Nick’s father (Dr. Adams) and his Uncle George. In a well developed composition discuss how Hemingway uses specific details to create all three characters. Your essay should be five paragraphs long with an introduction, a paragraph on each of the characters and a conclusion. Remember to include only your own observations and other material from class notes.

Length: 500 words

Lastly, the character of uncle George is created to introduce the place of a guiding force. Nick’s father is well conversant with a doctor’s workings, but the Indian camp is unfamiliar to him. Uncle George helps Dr. Adams while he is performing the procedure and is introduced as a reliable person that always praises Dr. Adams for his expertise. His words of praise and wisdom motivate the doctor and guide in understanding the Indian camp’. In the end, he disappears, lacking in the final scene, although nick’s father asserts that ‘he will be back again.’ Showing that his character is proof of an existing guiding force that will return multiple times in our lifetime, Hemingway also uses prejudice to create and explain uncle George’s essence. When she bites him, his Indian woman’s insult is evidence of his preference for one group of people over another. While the Indians find this funny, he is angered into abuses that further unveil his character’s underlying traits.

Washington sent a letter to Colonel Henry Lee III on in December 1775, claiming that success in the war would favor whatever side could arm Africa American men the fastest (Lanning, 2005). Washington suggested a policy to execute enslaved Africa Americans who would try to gain their freedom by enlisting in the British cause. Washington ordered the recruiters to reenlist free Africa Americans who had already served in the army because of the worries that some of these African American soldiers might cross over to the British cause. In 1776, congress backed Washington’s call and authorized the re-enlistment of free African Americans men who had already served.
