Turkish people have a work culture that promotes the practice of hard work. Kahraman (2016) notes that many Turkish people work long hours, which is a challenge to most foreigners who are not used to extended working hours. This culture provides both an advantage and a challenge for subsidiaries investing in the city. On the positive side, managers can quickly implement the Theory Y style of leadership that believes that employees are willing to work and need support to help them accomplish their tasks. This is contrary to Theory X, which believes employees are lazy and need to be pushed to work. On the negative side, the wages will be slightly higher than normal because employees are putting in more work and time. The subsidiary will also need to give preference to Turkish employees when hiring. Cases of xenophobia have been recorded in Turkey as a section of the society feel that it is better to give preference to locals in employment before considering foreigners.

To correctly understand it, a person must understand why leadership is global and how it came to attain such an attribute. To become a global leader, an individual has to fulfill three conditions. The first revolves around the complexity of the tasks they perform. Global leaders typically deal with more complex matters in comparison to national leaders (Mendenhall et al., 2013). They are expected to balance a lot of responsibilities that come with the assumption of duties with a global nature. The second condition encompasses the movement associated with global leaders. As a global leader, a person has to move around often. Such movement allows them to build and maintain relationships with the people they oversee (Mendenhall et al., 2013). Global leaders must also have the ability to immerse themselves seamlessly in other people’s cultures, co-exist, and lead them.  For a leader, connecting with the people they wish to lead requires them to be adaptable and flexible.

In discourse appertaining to organizational performance, the term strategy refers to the steps that an organization follows as a means of achieving its goals and objectives (Onday, 2016, p. 31). Strategies are essential for organizational success because they lay out a clear and defined plan that all stakeholders can follow to realize desired outcomes. Research into organizational performance has yielded insightful developments in the general understanding of corporate strategy. There are three main categories of organizational strategy: cost leadership, differentiation, and focus, or niche.  A cost-leadership strategy is an approach whereby organizations take various measures to lower their production and other operational costs (Jyoti et al., 2017, p. 172). SLA monitor is essential to cloud computing due to several reasons. First, it enables the early detection of downtime in cloud services to facilitate necessary changes. If an echo reply from the ICMP echo requests is not received within the intended timeframe, then it is considered down, and the associated route is removed from the routing table. Early detection can prevent the magnitude of the problem. SLA monitoring allows customers to get the best services as per the vendors’ prescribed standards (Ragmani, El Omri, Abghour, Moussaid & Rida, 2018). Enterprises may not have extensive knowledge of cloud computing, but SLA monitoring allows them to control the services they receive from vendors.

Autonomy and micromanagement.

Management should be more about enabling employees to be successful than overseeing their every move. This is especially true in early childhood programs where the teachers may function autonomously in some respects but are beholden to the established procedures of the larger organization. When more direct supervision is warranted, managers must attempt to strike a balance that falls somewhere between complete autonomy and micromanagement.

Consider both the positive and negative aspects of autonomy in the workplace. What might a manager need to do to be sure employees are fulfilling their obligations while maintaining a comfortable level of autonomy?

Submit a 2- to 3-page response that includes the following:

  • What are the risks and benefits of allowing team members to be autonomous? When is autonomy appropriate, and when is it appropriate to adhere to established protocols?
  • What procedures would need to be put in place to ensure that assignments are still being completed?
  • What happens when your employees are educated in a Type X environment? As a manager, how can you help them succeed in a Type I environment? Be specific.

Answer preview

Employee autonomy is appropriate for employers who have garnered sufficient expertise or experience in a specified field that they can be trusted to exercise proper judgment (Baird et al., 2018). The approach also suffices for the allocation of roles within teams where the top management has already determined the contribution expected from each group. In such instances, micromanagement is unnecessary because the team members know their strengths and allocate people’s roles. However, clear protocols should be established in circumstances where the persons discharging certain functions have limited experience (Baird et al., 2018). Similarly, the organization should establish clear guidelines for sensitive tasks concerning people’s safety and consumers’ concerns.

Debate Discussion

The eighth Debate Discussion assignment in this class relates to the HR Ethics box in Chapter 11 (p. 421):

HR Ethics: High-Tech Firms Collude to Limit Employee Pay

Several high-tech firms in Silicon Valley violated antitrust laws by agreeing that they would not try to hire each other’s employees. This limited employees’ job options and income.

  1. How should companies address the possibility of bidding wars when trying to retain top talent? How should HR professionals or general managers help address this issue?
  2. What compensation strategies would enable companies to attract and retain good employees without having to worry about bidding wars? How should the needs of employees be addressed in these strategies?

Your assignment is to 1) read the information in the box content, 2) answer these questions, 3) present/defend your ideas with thoughtful logic or relevant evidence, and 4) respond to at least two other students’ posts with other thoughtful analyses. Your posts should be comprehensive (multiple lengthy paragraphs), as well as concise and detailed.

Grades are assigned using a rubric with the following dimensions: 1) logic/support, 2) clarity/conciseness, 3) depth, 4) length, 5) contains multiple postings/responses.

Participation as an evaluation metric bears several cons. It creates communication complexities which can make decision making slow and bureaucratic. Each employee wishes to give their opinion so that they tick the box in their evaluation reports. Participation can overlook some employees’ strengths who are good at goal achievement than communication (Spisakova, 2019). It is also hard to maintain a clear employee-manager boundary as subordinates tend to feel entitled to being heard and may try to take on responsibilities reserved for managers.

scheduling was the retail manager’s function in collaboration with the human resources department. The retail manager works with other mid-level supervisors to create workable schedules for each department in the store. Scheduling is often a complex task at Walmart since there are many employees, shifts, and departments that must coordinate smoothly. The HR department is involved in only the complicated matter of scheduling, such as high absenteeism that causes employee shortages in the store. HR can step in to manage the employees, including meetings with those recording many cases of absenteeism.

The schedule is made at least two weeks in advance. However, the time frame varies for every peak, low and regular season. Peak and low season schedules are made months in advance for better planning, while regular-season schedules require less time to prepare. Both employees and managers provide input in the scheduling. According to Hwang and Park (2016), employees are legally allowed to propose workable schedules without repercussions. At Walmart, employees are encouraged to provide feedback on their preferred working hours, shifts, and programs. Retail managers then use these views to develop schedules that will not frustrate their employees. Those desiring to work longer hours are given more shifts while those who want a better work-life balance are given fewer working hours to pursue other interests.
