According to the functionalism theory, society exists and operates in different aspects to serve the needed purpose. Functionalists believe that inequality within a community is crucial in promoting unity and balance. Differences in wealth, power, and other rewards are vital to motivating people to engage in different activities. Society is unequally structured; therefore, organizations have a hierarchy to indicate the difference in power and authority among its members. This concept suggests that social stratification in the community is inevitable, and it serves the purpose of recognizing the unequal value of varied work (Kaufman, 2016). Tasks within an organization differ based on value. As a result, more qualified personnel will receive better rewards for those positions. Functionalists strive to explain the need for stratification in organizations. The difference in authority and benefits, such as pay among employees may impact their relationship with seniors. However, both the senior and junior staff members need to understand that stratification is essential for promoting efficiency and productivity. Therefore, mutual respect and support should be provided between managers and subordinates due to the distinct values added to the company. Each job and position in the organization adds value to the overall performance of the firm. While employers need to appreciate and respect their leaders’ role, the top management should also acknowledge the lower workers’ input in the hierarchy. Once both parties comprehend the functionalist aspect of work relations, a corporate mentality is developed to define the culture governing the work relations.
