In their article, Boserup et al. (2020) outline that the Covid 19 pandemic caused serious destruction, not only economic destruction but also social destruction. To prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the state governments implemented some policies like stay-at-home orders and social distancing. The implementation of the stay-at-home orders led to an increase in DV cases in different regions across the country. For instance, the Portland police department in Oregon reported a 22% increase in DV-related arrests compared to the prior week before the implementation of the stay-at-home policies. Similarly, the San Antonio Police department recorded an 18% increase in calls pertaining to family violence in March 2020 compared to the previous year. The sheriff’s department in Jefferson, Alabama, recorded an increase in DV-related calls by 27% in 2020 compared to the previous year.

Student Affairs Issue Project

The purpose of the Student Affairs Issue Project is to assist the PhD candidate with formulating his or her thoughts around a very important issue in today’s higher education culture. You will learn how to investigate issues and determine best practices for possible resolutions to the issue by articulating possible solutions.

From the professional associations’ websites or the higher education news agencies, choose a current student affairs issue being discussed (i.e., free speech, gender, racial equity, student debt). Develop a research question, narrowed to investigate a particular issue pertaining to student affairs. Submit your research question/topic with your rough draft and article critique.

Research question details: In developing a research question, be sure to do a thorough review of the Jerry Falwell Library resources, various higher education news agencies, and course material. Be sure you have a narrow student affairs issue with plenty of research material. You can determine the type (quantitative or qualitative) of research question and scope.

The purpose of the Student Affairs Issue Project: Article Critique Assignment is to assist the candidate with researching current literature in the Jerry Falwell Library. Being able to research current literature on a given topic will be very beneficial to any educational leader. Just as important as researching on a topic is the ability to fully understand what others have written on the topic, critiquing their findings, and appreciating how their work may be beneficial to yourresearch.

You are required to submit a critique (1,000–1,250 words, not including title, abstract, and reference pages) of an article related to your research question/topic. The article critique must be written in current APA format (including a title, abstract, reference pages), include 3 Level 1 headings (Background of the Study, Critique of the Study and Conclusion), and incorporate a minimum of 2 scholarly citations.

Access the Jerry Falwell Library (JFL) Online Research Portal and use the Education Research Guide link on the Student Affairs Issue Project: Article Critique Assignment page to find peer-reviewed journal articles. The article that you choose must be scholarly, empirical (research-based), and written within the last 5 years. The article must be at least 5–10 pages and be considered empirical; the article must clearly include specific sections that describe the study (e.g., method of research, quantitative or qualitative, participants, data collection, and findings).

Include the following elements in your critique:

Introduction (no header)

A. Inform the reader about your own research question/topic

B. Provide the article title and author

C. Offer insight into why the article was chosen

Background of the Study

A. Description of how the researchers attempted to answer the question:

a. Methodology

b. Population studied

c. Unique features of the study

B. Description of the research findings.

Critique of the Study

A. Do you have confidence in the researcher findings? (i.e., Were there flaws in thestudy design, questions, etc.?)

B. Does the study give an explanation to other people that were not the subject of the research (application of results to other locations, people, or groups—transferability)?

C. What does the study mean in the big picture and how does the study apply to yourown research question/topic?

D. What ways could your biblical worldview fit into the contents of the article?

Conclusion

Format the critique in current APA format and see the grading rubric for specific grading criteria.

Requirements: 1000 1250 words

Issue discussed is free speech ~ the Article Critique should be an article surrounding free speech

Research question:

What are the motivations behind colleges and universities adopting policies that restrict the free speech rights of their students?

Answer preview

According to the survey conducted by the researcher, one-third of the student reported having experienced offensive responses from fellow students. Most of these students are more sensitive and voted for the policies that restrict their fellow students’ freedom of speech. Additionally, compared to female students, male students are less likely to be offended by other students’ comments or remarks. Interestingly, neither the newly enrolled students nor students from ethnic minority groups stood to complain of bad experiences from people expressing their views. The question of whether students were intolerant of controversial views on controversial topics in the school was also answered (Revers & Traunmüller, 2020). Overall, most students believe that they should be allowed to discuss controversial issues in school. Also, universities should employ teachers who can accept different viewpoints from students.

Ethical dilemmas in clinical settings are often unavoidable. Since I expect to encounter various ethical dilemmas during my clinical experience and future practice, my third goal is to learn at least one strategy for dealing with ethical dilemmas by the end of the first month of my clinical experience. One of the things I learned related to this goal is that caring for patients from different cultural backgrounds can present numerous ethical dilemmas. For instance, Indian cultural beliefs prevent them from taking any medications made from animal-based products. This belief can present an ethical dilemma to a psychiatric nurse practitioner, especially when the most effective and safest medication they can prescribe to an Indian patient is made from an animal-based product. The most valuable experience I acquired related to this goal was the importance of having an ethical framework to guide one’s decision-making.

The swell of blood vessels in the light-sensitive layers of the retina causes ROP. Some treatments have side effects, but a combination of medication and therapy can help heal the disease. The standard treatment of ROP is laser therapy which helps burn away the area covering the retina edges with no normal blood vessels (Chiang, Quinn, Fielder, Ostmo, & Chan, et al., 2021). This procedure helps bring sight to the main part of the visual field. Other therapy procedures include cryotherapy, which uses an instrument to freeze certain eye parts that have grown past the retina. The common drug used for the treatment of ROP is Anti-VEGF drugs which help block the continued growth of blood vessels in the retina. Although this drug is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it is used as an alternative to laser therapy.

There are various challenges of Assimilation. First it makes people lose their family traditions. Even though most families do not part ways, their traditions might not be accepted when assimilated into new cultures, forcing them to adapt to new traditions. That reduces diversity, limiting different perspectives. Even though diverse teams always outperform non-diverse teams, they are always afraid to express their opinions because it is unknown (Hammar 10). Assimilation may create higher levels of crimes because it sometimes forces people into situations that must break the law. For instance, some legislatures, such as segregation and slavery, are unjust. However, that does not limit the majority government from enforcing the law, hence affecting how the minority groups behave.

Evidence-based strategies to promote health literacy

using specific evidence-based strategies to promote health literacy. Read the attached scenario transcript and discuss the following:

  1. Explain and discuss in simple terms how cigarette smoking causes coronary artery disease.

Use APA (7th edition) format for in-text citations and at least three scholarly references, preferably from provider-based or NP-based journals to support your evidence.

Answer preview

A person risks heart attack from smoking either actively or passively. Passive smoking has dire effects compared to active smoking due to the lack of a filter. Either way, all smoking is bad for health. The risk of coronary heart disease drops significantly immediately after a person stops smoking (Kamceva et al., 2016). It is noteworthy that a person’s risk of death from smoking depreciates significantly and even almost totally after a prolonged period without smoking. Years without smoking could equate to a person who has never smoked once before in their life.

Several procedures help people with coronary heart disease to cope and lead normal lives. One of the most common is graft surgery, which reduces the arteries’ thinning (Malakar et al., 2019). Quitting smoking contributes a great deal to the success of the surgery because it ensures that the arteries do not shrink again. Ingestion of medicine for CAD and counseling equally help a person’s journey to quit smoking (Kamceva et al., 2016). In conclusion, treatment for coronary artery disease lowers the risk of heart attack caused by smoking and helps a person lead a better life.

The concept of objectivity in the journalism industry should be interrogated to determine whether it is a myth. The rules of being secretive about one’s identity are a weapon to silence sexuality within the heteronormative newsroom culture. The culture of homonormative journalism is pervasive within this industry. Black LGBT journalists are expected to adjust their identity toward employment. Otherwise, being explicit about one’s self-identity is perceived as offensive and destabilizes job security. The marginalized gay and lesbian journalists are thus discouraged from bringing perspectives about their identity to the newsroom. The journalism entities comprise mainly white men, while a low membership is recorded of people of color and LGBT. Strategies to address discrimination based on race and sexuality are scrutinized. Minimal opportunities are created to include employment and networking of LGBT journalists. Interventions are made by leadership in journalism to improve the diversity of the workforce. However, other stations address the issue by avoiding topics related to the LGBT agenda. The best solution is to educate the newsroom personnel about LGBT diversity and discrimination. This strategy effectively eliminates discrimination and prejudice against marginalized LGBT journalists. Despite these efforts, there are no transgender or transexual journalists at the significant new network entities and affiliates.

The Death Penalty and Deterrence

Assignment #3-2 Reflection Essay “Death Penalty”

READ the following articles and watch the video:

Think about the the observations in Chapter 13, and make sure to focus on the short The Death Penalty and Deterrence discussion on page 349. (The textbook author’s observation that current data does not show a link between the death penalty and reducing violent crime is consistent with other mainline research on the topic). Look also at the discussion of Innocence Projects in that same page of the textbook.

Think about that data, and then review and think about articles above. Finally, watch the video of the talk by a juror involved in a death penalty case and her reflections on the issue.

In your essay, reflect on

Your essay should be at least 2 double spaced pages and submitted through Blackboard here. It is worth 50 points and due byend of day October 9th. Because it is a reflection essay, no formal APA citation is required.

Requirements: 2 pages

When analyzing the death penalty, one should also focus on topics such as the lack of adequate representation for poor defendants, as well as the link between race and the death penalty. The death penalty is not applied in racially neutral ways, considering African Americans are more likely than their white counterparts to receive the death penalty (Gramlich, 2021). This phenomenon can be attributed to underlying racial biases and prejudices against people of color, which make jurors more inclined to give death sentences to defendants of color. Lack of financial resources can also increase the likelihood of the defendant receiving the death penalty. This is because such defendants cannot afford high-quality lawyers, leaving them at the mercy of overworked public defendants. Due to this, many poor defendants, who would have otherwise avoided the death penalty, end up receiving it. One’s environment, such as culture, Community, and upbringing, impacts their perceptions of whether the death penalty is justified.

I am exploring my past experiences in my new settlement in Alabama. Slavery is a norm here, although the region is not yet a state. From what I gathered from my parents, slaves contributed to 30% of Alabama’s population. Strikingly, the number doubled in the 1830s. I found it more intriguing to learn that Alabama gained its statehood when cotton production was gaining traction and spreading to the South. The unfortunate aspect was that masters held most slaves in bondage in some counties, such as the Tennesse River Valley. Further, the settlers from eastern Georgia and the western side of South Carolina owned the slaves, but they sought cheaper labor and fertile land in Alabama. I learned that the encounters slaves experienced were contradictory and confusing during this remarkable period in history known as the antebellum period. The period between 1832 and 1860 was a time that resulted in the formation of the United States government and contentions that led to the American Civil War. Notably, the demand for slavery skyrocketed, and importing slaves from the African Continent increased the price for the slaves. Consequently, this made the small-scale farmers in Virginia richer since they sold their slaves further to the west and South.
