The Education Pendulum

Assessment Description

Educators often rely on best practices to inform their own practice. However, the phenomenon of the education pendulum can make best practice appear cyclical. In this assignment, you will revise your earlier paper on the education pendulum and critique and assess current best practices in education.

General Information:

  • Refer to the Topic 2 paper “The Education Pendulum.”
  • This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
  • Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Center.
  • Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association for specific guidelines related to doctoral-level writing. The Manual contains essential information on manuscript structure and content, clear and concise writing, and academic grammar and usage.
  • This assignment requires that at least two additional scholarly research sources related to this topic, and at least one in-text citation from each source be included.
  • You are required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.

Directions:

Part 1

Present a revised version (1,750-2,050 words total) of the paper “The Education Pendulum” that makes improvements in the caliber of the writing and incorporates instructor feedback regarding content and writing. Include the following in your submission:

  1. A reflection (250-300 words) that provides a bulleted list of the changes you made to the paper and discusses your revision process including how you incorporated your instructor’s feedback into the revised version. Similar to an abstract, this section will receive its own page following the title page and preceding the introduction to the paper.
  2. The revised paper that incorporates instructor feedback; clarifies the thesis statement and solidifies supporting arguments; edits for grammar, spelling, and punctuation; adjusts word choice to display professional and scholarly language; and adjusts sentence structure for improved readability.

Part 2

Write an additional 1,250-1,500 words in which you address current best practices in education. This section should flow naturally from the revised paper. So, you may also need to revise your introduction and thesis statement to allow the ideas to connect. Write a paper of 1,500–1,750 words that addresses current best practices in education. In your paper, include the following:

  1. A research-supported discussion of current best practices in education. In your discussion, propose reasons why research-supported best practices are often not adopted by school leaders and teachers.
  2. A research-supported discussion analyzing the best practices and their contribution to education.
  3. A research-supported discussion of the future trends in education and what you, as an educational leader are doing and will do to prepare for these future trends. How does the phenomenon of the education pendulum influence your preparation?

Schools and curriculum centers are ingrained in cycles of perpetual change, which impact the educational leader, teacher, and student. Changes in the learning process are inevitable, and educators must commit to integrating tools and means that enhance the best experiences of the learners. Sometimes school reforms are at the center of political debates fueled by individualistic notions of policy over the cooperative models to enhance positive outcomes (Zajda, 2018). The cooperative models are reliable for school improvement and learning. Recently, information technology (IT) development has created a new education paradigm (Golubev & Testov, 2015). Generally, paradigms influence education design and learning. With network information technologies, earlier methods mean and content of education no longer align with the new paradigm. There is a significant transformation in education, from teaching to self-teaching and

Create an 8-10 slide digital presentation to highlight how you implemented the IWY strategy during field experiences to introduce and reinforce language and literacy concepts. This strategy will be beneficial as a collaborative resource for teachers district-wide to analyze student data based on student performance in order to modify instruction and implement next steps for instruction. Be sure to include a title slide, reference slide, and presenter’s notes.

Your presentation should include a summary of each instructional strategy implemented in the field experiences, how it could be amended for future instruction, including the following:

  • How to evaluate language and literacy strategies and student performance when modifying instruction and determining appropriate interventions with at-risk and struggling readers.
  • Examples of how to manage and monitor the success of the interventions for at-risk and struggling readers.
  • The ethical way to communicate student progress data, and how to analyze the data based on performance in order to modify instruction.
  • How you will collaborate with professionals in order to advance this professional practice.

Support your findings with two scholarly resources.

Perspective of federal government

Please read the case “Who’s to Blame for the College Admissions Scandal?” given on Page number 112, Chapter 3– “The Manager’s Changing Work Environment and Ethical Responsibilities”Management: A Practical Introduction” 10th edition by Angelo Kinicki, & Denise B. Soignet and answer the following questions:

QUESTIONS

Q1. What is the underlying problem in this case from the perspective of federal government, the parents, and the prospective college students?

Q2. Why do you think the parents were willing to play such a significant and risky role in their kid’s college admissions?

Q3. How do you think the general environment, particularly economic, demographic, international and sociocultural forces, fed into the admissions scandal?

Q4. Are the children who were aware of the cheating scheme purely victims in this situation, or should they also be considered unethical? Explain your answer using one of the four approaches to deciding ethical dilemmas.

Q5. Based on what you have learned about Rick Singer, his involvement, and his decision to cooperate in the investigation, where would you place his level of moral development? Explain your answer.

Answer preview

Environmental forces influenced the unethical practices of the parents, administrators, and coaches in the college admission scandal. For instance, economic factors included wealth disparity, and parents who could afford to bribe college officials had the opportunity to admit their kids to colleges illegally, unlike parents who fell into the low-class economy. Additionally, occupation and family incomes were the demographic factors that also impacted the admissions scandal. For example, some of the parents involved in the scandal were high-profile individuals like executives, attorneys, and actresses, i.e., Felicity Huffman.

The sociocultural aspects of the admission scandal included attitudes towards education and success. This is evident as some parents believe their children will be successful in the future by attending only school. Therefore, the parents are willing to spend whatever it takes to ascertain that their kids attend a distinguished school. Furthermore, international factors such as the admission of international students may have influenced the unethical practices that led to the

Higher education culture

The purpose of the Student Affairs Issue Project is to assist the PhD candidate with formulating his or her thoughts around a very important issue in today’s higher education culture. You will learn how to investigate issues and determine best practices for possible resolutions to the issue by articulating possible solutions.

From the professional associations’ websites or the higher education news agencies, choose a current student affairs issue being discussed (i.e., free speech, gender, racial equity, student debt). Develop a research question, narrowed to investigate a particular issue pertaining to student affairs. Submit your research question/topic with your rough draft and article critique.

Research question details: In developing a research question, be sure to do a thorough review of the Jerry Falwell Library resources, various higher education news agencies, and course material. Be sure you have a narrow student affairs issue with plenty of research material. You can determine the type (quantitative or qualitative) of research question and scope.

The purpose of the Student Affairs Issue Project: Article Critique Assignment is to assist the candidate with researching current literature in the Jerry Falwell Library. Being able to research current literature on a given topic will be very beneficial to any educational leader. Just as important as researching on a topic is the ability to fully understand what others have written on the topic, critiquing their findings, and appreciating how their work may be beneficial to yourresearch.

You are required to submit a critique (1,000–1,250 words, not including title, abstract, and reference pages) of an article related to your research question/topic. The article critique must be written in current APA format (including a title, abstract, reference pages), include 3 Level 1 headings (Background of the Study, Critique of the Study and Conclusion), and incorporate a minimum of 2 scholarly citations.

Access the Jerry Falwell Library (JFL) Online Research Portal and use the Education Research Guide link on the Student Affairs Issue Project: Article Critique Assignment page to find peer-reviewed journal articles. The article that you choose must be scholarly, empirical (research-based), and written within the last 5 years. The article must be at least 5–10 pages and be considered empirical; the article must clearly include specific sections that describe the study (e.g., method of research, quantitative or qualitative, participants, data collection, and findings).

Include the following elements in your critique:

Introduction (no header)

A. Inform the reader about your own research question/topic

B. Provide the article title and author

C. Offer insight into why the article was chosen

Background of the Study

A. Description of how the researchers attempted to answer the question:

a. Methodology

b. Population studied

c. Unique features of the study

B. Description of the research findings.

Critique of the Study

A. Do you have confidence in the researcher findings? (i.e., Were there flaws in thestudy design, questions, etc.?)

B. Does the study give an explanation to other people that were not the subject of the research (application of results to other locations, people, or groups—transferability)?

C. What does the study mean in the big picture and how does the study apply to yourown research question/topic?

D. What ways could your biblical worldview fit into the contents of the article?

Conclusion

Format the critique in current APA format and see the grading rubric for specific grading criteria.

Requirements: 1000 1250 words

Issue discussed is free speech ~ the Article Critique should be an article surrounding free speech

Research question:

What are the motivations behind colleges and universities adopting policies that restrict the free speech rights of their students?

Answer preview

According to the survey conducted by the researcher, one-third of the student reported having experienced offensive responses from fellow students. Most of these students are more sensitive and voted for the policies that restrict their fellow students’ freedom of speech. Additionally, compared to female students, male students are less likely to be offended by other students’ comments or remarks. Interestingly, neither the newly enrolled students nor students from ethnic minority groups stood to complain of bad experiences from people expressing their views. The question of whether students were intolerant of controversial views on controversial topics in the school was also answered (Revers & Traunmüller, 2020). Overall, most students believe that they should be allowed to discuss controversial issues in school. Also, universities should employ teachers who can accept different viewpoints from students. Teachers allowed to teach in the university are those who can hold different

Webb’s Depth of Knowledge.

As stated in the Syllabus, educators typically use Bloom’s Taxonomy for instruction.

A new tool has become widely used in many school districts across the country: Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK).

In the modules, you will find the DOK Wheel and DOK Questions. Use the handouts for reference as you design assessments for your students.

For your Discussion 1 submission, research online to find DOK references that you would recommend to classmates. Include a URL for at least two in your post.

Requirements: 2 paragraphs

Answer preview

The Common Core Institute (CCI) recognizes the DOK as a resourceful framework while integrated into the Common Core State Standards required when developing curricula (Hess, 2013). According to CCI, relying on the standards alone cannot effectively enhance rigor in the classroom setting (Hess, 2013). However, practical tools such as the DOK helps the instructors to design criteria that promote a systematic analysis of the aligned standards and tests in standardized evaluations. When assessing History and Social Studies learners, level one of the DOK tool encourages them to recall, identify, or locate basic details, facts, or events. The question, “Can you recall the US presidents in their order,” can apply to History. In the process, the instructor can determine if the learners can retrieve information from their long-term memory through recall.
